Revenge is a dish best served cold. This tried, tested and approved theory has been employed by director Sanjay Gupta to make the movie audience friendly. Kaabil draws inspiration from the Hollywood movie ‘Blind Fury’ (1989), and a Korean superhit ‘Broken’ (2014). Sanjay Gupta’s version is palatable to the Indian audience.
Kaabil Movie Plot
The story revolves around a couple who met on a blind date *pun intended* and it was love at first sight *pun intended* spending the first half of the movie head over heels in love. Then a tragedy befalls the couple. Kaabil resurrects the rape-then-revenge combo with Ronit Roy and Rohit Roy actor-brother combo playing crooks. Our female protagonist takes her life after the assault and the male protagonist has his revenge. Kaabil tries very hard to surprise the audience but you can see everything coming from about a mile away.
Kaabil Character Sketch
Even Yami Gautam and her acting skills cannot compensate for the lack of depth in her character. Ronit Roy is the highlight of this film. He makes sure that the audience dislikes him from the first scene on. After ‘Udaan’, ‘Boss’ and ‘Two States’ he now knows his villainous characters like the back of his hand. Hrithik Roshan is the only bright spot in this film. Sanjay Gupta does a good job here in getting us to root for the underdog. Kaabil finally establishes Hrithik as an action hero.
Kaabil movie Defining Points
There’s a lot of logic lost in this movie. It’s far-fetched scenarios practically impossible for blind people, makes the audience feel like its being duped. It has none of glory of ‘Black’ while portraying blind protagonists. The break-out dance sequence Mon Amour, looks like an Al Pacino rip-off from ‘Scent of a Woman’. Sanjay Gupta and his films now being reduced to memes is a fine example of the devil in the details.
Kaabil goes out of its way to type-cast Ronit Roy and Yami Gautam, and does its best to push Hrithik Roshan up a few rungs up in his career. There is no novelty in this film and it may not have the elements of a fine drama/action but its not unwatchable.
